Travelling without moving

No longer just a playground for computer nerds and lonely hearts, virtual reality now offers an alternative for those wanting to attend global events without doing environmental damage by travelling. New campaign group OneClimate.net is offering would-be delegates at December’s UN Climate Change Conference in Bali the opportunity to attend the event by visiting a different island altogether – One Climate Island, the organization’s meeting space on 3-D virtual world Second Life (pictured left).

Press conferences and interviews will be videoed and then replayed later the same day in Second Life, after which conference panelists in Bali will respond live to questions and comments from the online audience. OneClimate.net is running training sessions to ensure that ‘delegates’ get the most out of the experience. The sessions in Second Life will be limited to a few hundred participants, but in order to reach a wider audience the conference will be streamed onto www.oneclimate.net and will also be screened for delegates in Bali itself.
